Testing is only required for the initial license*. There
are two types of testing provisions that could appear on your license,
those for State-mandated and competency testing. All provisions must be
removed within three years from the date the license is issued.
State-mandated testing
Provisions of Nevada School Law, Nevada Constitution, and
U.S. Constitution must be satisfied by achieving a minimum 70% passing
score on approved examinations.
Information regarding State-mandated testing can be found
at
University of Nevada, Reno web
site.
Alternatively, you may satisfy State-mandated provisions
by taking appropriate course work from the list of
approved providers

Competency Testing
Nevada utilizes Educational Testing Service (ETS) for
administration of The Praxis Series
competency testing. The Praxis Series
website provides the latest testing and registration information (sample
test questions, testing dates, testing locations, accommodations for
non-native speakers and those with disabilities, fees, etc.) and news.
Visit The
Praxis Series
website
and select
Nevada
from the drop down menu for a comprehensive list of tests required and
passing scores.
NOTICE:
Effective 2/16/08, Nevada has added subject assessment testing for
the area of Early Childhood Education. Two tests will be required:
0021 – Education of Young Children and 0022 – Early Childhood:
Content Knowledge. These tests will be no-fault scoring for the
first year. These tests might not appear in Nevada’s section of the
Praxis website until their next update.
If you provide ETS with your Social Security Number
AND
our recipient code,
R8670, on the Registration Form the
Nevada Department of Education can receive your test scores
electronically. If your registration form is incomplete or incorrectly
filled out, it will be incumbent upon you to submit an
original
score report to our office.
The
Testing Exception
Bulletin
provides possible exemptions from testing.
Testing is only required in one endorsement area. In
some instances, more than one test could be required for an endorsement
area. The option exists to take test(s) for either your major or minor
endorsement. However, it might be to your advantage to consider testing
in the minor endorsement area for purposes of becoming a Highly
Qualified (HQ) Teacher under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Your
employer can provide you information regarding becoming HQ.
*
Applicants who have
been licensed in Nevada as a Substitute (only) or those who hold a Business and
Industry license might be required to take Praxis II tests if they
qualify for a regular teaching license at a future date.
