Wellness Training Web Course

To receive a license to teach middle school or junior high school education, a person must hold a bachelor’s degree or a higher degree from an accredited college or university and have completed:

1.   A program of preparation for teaching middle school or junior high school education which is approved by the Board; or

2.   Twenty-four (24) semester credits of course work required in Professional Education which must include:

A. Eight (8) semester credits of supervised student teaching in a designated middle school or junior high school; and

B. A course in the methods and materials for teaching the major or minor field of specialization at the middle school, junior high school or secondary grade level or a middle school or junior high school level integrated methods course; and

C. Three (3) semester credits in a course of study regarding education or curricular adaptation for pupils with disabilities and/or a course or study regarding educational foundation or methods in teaching English language learners;

D. Six (6) semester credits of course work required in at least two of the following:

1) Middle school foundations, history, theory or philosophy;

2) Middle school curriculum, pedagogy or assessment;

3) Adolescent growth and development;

4) Nature and needs of the adolescent, including social, emotional, and cultural concerns;

5) Classroom management strategies;

6) School/family/community collaboration; or

7) Supervision and evaluation of programs and pupils in a middle school; and (e) Six (6) semester credits of course work in any of the following subjects:

8) English as a second language/bilingualism or biculturalism;

9) Educational technology;

10) Tests and measurement;

11) Educational psychology;

12) Education of the exceptional child;

13) Multicultural education; or

14) Educational research; and

3.   Twenty-four (24) semester credits in a major field of endorsement or area of concentration. Subsequent minor fields of endorsement may be added to the license upon verification of fourteen (14) semester hours of credit.

4.   The following subjects are recognized for an endorsement on a middle school or junior high school education license:

A. Art;

B. English/Language Arts;

C. Foreign Language - limited to languages cited in NAC 391.131 (k) (1-9) See available languages on secondary license requirements;

D. Mathematics;

E. Music;

F. Science;

G. Social Science.

5.   An endorsement for Mathematics requires the completion of three (3) semester credits to include a course in college algebra or the concepts of calculus, including an introduction to limits, derivatives and integrals, pre-calculus or differential calculus.

6.   The major or minor fields of endorsement or area of concentration identified in paragraph 4 of this subsection shall be deemed to be met if the applicant holds a bachelor’s degree or a higher degree with a major, minor or area of concentration identified on the official transcript of record conferred by a regionally accredited college or university.

*Note:  The middle school /junior high license is issued for grades 7-9; however, you would not be qualified to teach 9th grade in a high school setting.
