Renewal of Standard or Professional License
According to NAC 391.065, Nevada educators
are required to complete six (6) credits of professional
development education to renew their licenses. Renewal
requirements may vary depending on the type of license held and
are referenced in the Exceptions/Options area. The
requirements for renewing a license are also listed on the
reverse side of the license. According to NAC 391.075, the six
(6) credits of professional development education should:
- Be directly related to the person’s
current license,
- Be part of an additional endorsement,
- Be in a subject for which shortages of
personnel exist, or
- Be part of an approved program leading to
an advanced degree.

Credits taken toward renewal must be
completed after the date the license is issued and prior
to the date the license expires. The renewal application may be
submitted as early as nine (9) months before the license expires.
Professional development credits may be
earned from a regionally accredited college/university at the
undergraduate or graduate level or from a provider sanctioned by the
Nevada Department of Education who has requested pre-approval to offer
continuing education courses.
Exceptions/Options
National Board Certification: A
licensee may receive six (6) renewal credits for the completion of the
requirements for the National Board Certification (NBC) upon the
submission of the official assessment score report issued by the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. A person is not
required to hold a NBC to receive such credits.
Education Specialist (Ed.S.) or
Doctoral Degree (Ed.D., Ph.D.): A licensee who holds one of these
degrees need only submit Evidence of Professional Growth (E.P.G.)
instead of the six (6) credits generally required. E.P.G. may be shown
by teaching at the college level or proof of attending seminars or
workshops. Submit verification of a teaching assignment signed by a
college/university dean stating course number, credits, and semesters
taught. This verification should be written on college/university
letterhead.
Post-Secondary Teaching: A
licensee who holds a Master’s or more advanced degree may receive a
maximum of two (2) renewal credits by conducting a seminar or workshop
or by teaching at the college level if the seminar, course, etc., being
taught is in the same area of the license held. Submit verification of a
teaching assignment signed by a college/university dean stating course
number, credits, and semesters taught. This verification should be
written on college/university letterhead.
Educational Conferences: A
licensee interested in attending a conference that is not State approved
is required to complete the In-service Pre-Approval form. Visit
http://nvteachers.doe.nv.gov/Home.htm, under In-Service to locate
the Course Approval Form.
Automotive Service Technology: A
licensee with this endorsement is entitled to receive three (3)
professional development credits toward the renewal of the endorsement
for each area of certification issued by the National Institute for
Automotive Service Excellence as an automobile technician (brakes,
electrical and electronic systems, engine performance, and/or suspension
and steering) or a master automobile technician.
School Nurse: A licensee must
submit verification of a valid Nevada Nursing License in lieu of the six
(6) renewal credits.
School Psychologist: A licensee may submit a valid certificate as a
Nationally Certified School Psychologist issued by the National School
Psychology Certification System of the National Association of School
Psychologists in lieu of the six (6) credits upon renewal.
School Social Worker: A licensee
must have completed at least six (6) semester hours in education
relating to social work in schools or an equal amount of credit for
in-service work relating to social work in schools or and submit a valid
license issued by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers.
Nevada Retired Teacher Status: A
person with a retired Nevada Teacher license is automatically waived
from traditional professional development credits.
Speech and Language Impairments: A
person who holds a current ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association) certificate or an equivalent license from the Nevada Board
of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology.
