To receive an elementary license, a person must
hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and
have completed:
1. A program of
preparation for teaching in the elementary grades which is approved
by the board;
2. Thirty-two
semester hours of courses in elementary professional education
consisting of:
A. Eight semester hours in supervised student
teaching in kindergarten through eighth grade;
B. Nine semester hours in methods of teaching
elementary subjects,
including, but not limited to: mathematics, science and social
studies;
C. Nine semester hours in the teaching of
literacy or language arts; and
D. Six semester hours of professional education
course work in any or a combination of the following subjects:
1) Classroom management;
2) English as a second language;
3) Technology;
4) Evaluation of pupils;
5) Child development;
6) Special education; or
6) Social and cultural issues;
Elementary Endorsements
1. To receive an endorsement on an elementary
license, a person must complete 12 semester hours of credit within
the area of the endorsement, except that:
2. The board recognizes the following subjects for an
endorsement on an elementary license:
A. Computers and technology relating to the use
of computers;
B. English;
C. Health;
D. Mathematics;
E. Literacy;
F. Science;
G. Social studies;
H. Bilingual education;
Exception: An endorsement for English requires the
completion of 3 semester credits in advanced composition, 3 semester
credits in descriptive grammar, and 3 semester credits in speech. The
remaining 3 credits can be from any area in English.
3. An endorsement on an elementary license is not
required to teach kindergarten through eighth grade. The provisions
of this subsection do not prohibit a school district from requiring
a specific endorsement on an elementary license as a requirement for
employment with that district.
Note: The elementary license is issued fro grades K-8;
however, due to the No Child Left Behind Act, you might need to be
Highly qualifies (HQ) to utilize the license to teach at the 7th
and 8th grade levels. Contact your potential employer about
the options available to become HQ or read about
Nevada’s HOUSE rules.
